  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts in Granada, Nicaragua with the nearest airport being Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA) in the capital city, Managua. The airport is approximately 50 km from Granada and is about an hour away.

The tour ends in Panama City and is serviced by the Tocumen International Airport (PTY).

  • How long is the tour? How many cycling days?

The tour is 15 days long with 12 days cycling.

  • What's the tour like?

This trip is classified as road with an activity level rating of 4 (Moderate-Challenging). The terrain and route surface is  80% tarmac, 20% unpaved track with some hills and generally rolling terrain.

The routes follow quiet back roads where possible. In Costa Rica, the way from the Northwest corner of the country to the exit at the Southeast corner, will have sections where roads used have heavy traffic. This is because in some regions they are the only paved roads available.

The tour covers some remote parts of the region. Though many of the roads are in good condition, there can be potholes and poor road conditions in some sections. The roads are generally free of heavy traffic until some towns are reached. In the harder areas there are some longish climbs, requiring good fitness, (particularly as the region is invariably hot and humid) and also some steep descents.

Occasionally it may not be possible to follow the itinerary exactly as planned. Leaders will always watch for hazardous traffic situations, road closures, ferry cancellations etc. and look for alternate routes/solutions whenever required. In all such cases that involve shortening a cycling stage, every effort will be made to recover lost mileage (or missed visits) later in the trip.

Following a review of the trips, it has been categorised that this trip is generally not suitable for persons of reduced mobility.

  • Is a bike available?

Yes, a Trek 3900 bike will be used in Nicaragua while a Scott Aspect 740/750 will be used in Costa Rica and Panama. Both have front suspension and are perfect for the road conditions of the tour.

    Extra Bike Bits

You may bring your own pedals and saddle (excluding the seat post) or gel saddle cover to fit to the hire bikes. This is encouraged, if it is your preference. However, please note that you are responsible for your own equipment, and removing your saddle/pedals at the end of the trip. It's not guaranteed that any bike parts left behind can be returned.

  • Do I have to wear/bring a helmet?

Wearing a helmet is mandatory for anyone taking part in this cycling holiday. Group members must bring their own helmets, as they are not available for hire.

Cycling of all kinds has its dangers and accidents can happen from time to time. Please ensure that you are properly prepared for the riding you are going to undertake.

    Recommended Cycling Clothing

Padded cycling shorts (with loose 'over-shorts' where recommended), breathable clothing, and a lightweight waterproof/windproof top. Shoes with relatively stiff soles are better for biking but are not essential unless you are cycling long distances. Most people want to carry certain items with them during the day while cycling, for this we recommend a large bum-bag or small close-fitting daysack.

  • Should I have travel insurance?

Yes. It is a condition of joining this holiday that you must be fully insured against medical and personal accident risks (to include repatriation costs and air ambulance or helicopter rescue services where appropriate). On arrival in destination for your trip, you will be asked to present details to your leader or local representative of your policy.

  • What's the weather like?

Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama lie between 5º and 15º north of the equator, and have an almost perfect tropical climate. The average temperature is 10-13ºC in the highlands, and 22-28ºC in the lowlands. There is a rainy season from May to October when there may be daily downpours, though these are usually quite short and there is still plenty of bright sunshine. November to April is the driest time of the year but you should still expect some rain, particularly in the cloud forests. August offers moderate temperatures.

  • Are there any travel documents needed?

    Passport

All nationalities require a full passport that must be valid for 6 months beyond the intended length of stay. It is your responsibility to have the correct personal documents and to obtain your own visa, if one is necessary, in accordance with the regulations of the country you are to visit. It's best to consult with your travel agent or the relevant embassies.

If you are in two minds about booking this trip, book! The cycling was not easy at times due to a combination of hills, non paved roads, distance and heat. However, this added to the challenge, adventure and achievement and our expectations were well managed by our fantastic Costa Rican guide/leader, Jackie. The journey through three countries provided some amazing rides. Personal highlights were those ending with swims in the Pacific and Caribbean oceans where we would literally cycle on to the beach and jump in for a swim! There were also rides through cloud forests to rain forests, to and from volcanoes, through local villages and through banana plantations spotting monkeys, toucans, sloths and other wildlife along the way! Along the trip we also enjoyed a couple of optional non cycling days and exciting pit stops. I loved our tour round a chocolate farm, canopy walk through a rain forest, zip lining, red frog island trip and walk through a butterfly nature reserve. The non cycling activities allowed us to experience more of the three amazing countries we visited. Nature and wildlife feature highly on the trip but the start and end in Granada and Panama City provided a great contrast and are beautiful places to spend a few days. The amazing feat of the Panama Canal was also fitting end to the trip. The trip was exceptionally organised from start to finish. There were no issues and I cannot think of any areas of improvement. Travel is with a group leader, mechanic and driver who were all fantastic and fundamental to the success of the trip. Our Costa Rican guide Jackie is a real gem! She provided interesting and informative information about the history, culture and environment of the places we visited and an infectious sense of fun and positivity. She provided excellent briefings about the cycling before each ride, she had a genuine love of Central America and she was a joy to be around. She was also a very good cyclist. The hotels and restaurants selected by Exodus were well chosen and some were so good they were highlights of the trip. I will remember this trip and the lifelong friendships I have formed for years to come. Thank you Jackie and the team and book if you are considering this trip! I will be coming back for more!

A really enjoyable trip with plenty of cycling and with options to increase on certain days if you have surplus energy. A great way to see 3 countries in 2 weeks. Sometimes the cycling was quite challenging - particularly some of the muddy trails in Nicaragua ( which were great fun) and some of the hills in Costa Rica. Weather was varied . Sometimes really hot and humid and sometimes very wet due to rainy season . So be prepared and keep changes of clothes close to hand. Raft ride was great . Guides and support team were great . Nice balance between open evenings and meals as a group . Highly recommend this trip

An absolutely excellent trip and a great way to see three countries in two weeks. There was a real mix of cycling, from rough, tough, dirty stuff, to long smooth straights as well as everything in between (it's essentially a road trip though). A few hills were quite demanding (not least in the heat), so the gravity downhill afterwards was welcome! There was some stunning scenery and it's pretty green and lush everywhere. Beyond the cycling, the other activities added to the sense of holiday, while also giving greater insight into what each country has to offer.
