Must see Croatia

MICHAEL BEIRNE
(Review obtained from Tour Operator)

This trip is a must do! Croatia is not only beautifully scenic, its people are friendly and most speak English. The ride is challenging but doable. If you're looking for adventure and beautiful, friendly country, this one's for you.
Day 1 is a bit of a challenge with a 10k uphill climb. Be ready for this but everyone on our trip completed it and we were rewarded with a delicious meal at the top.
Our leader was Alan. He has a real enthusiasm for cycling and is excited to show you his country.

My husband and I have just returned from this cycle trip and we can highly recommend it to anyone thinking of doing the same. Alan, the tour leader, was outstanding and I just hope he gets paid enough! We had a lovely group with mixed ages and four lovely Canadians and a very helpful, smiley driver, Tommy. Slightly better hotels could improve the trip and, yes, better coffee and orange juice for breakfast.
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Completing all the cycling!
What did you think of your group leader?
Outstanding. Catered very well for the needs of all the clients.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Make the most of the beautiful scenery.

Excellent leader Alan. Great balance between towns and countryside. Difficult to find anything I would change, perhaps better hotel coffee.
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Not having been before, Dubrovnic was fascinating, but really it was the fabulous coastlines throughout the trip.
What did you think of your group leader?
Alan is knowledgeable on history, very thorough on briefings especially safety. Also a nice guy. Excellent.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
No, it was what was on the tin as they say.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
The ferries are great, clean and comfortable.

The brochure tells you about the scenery etc but until you get there whow! It's a trip you must do the scenery ,roads and great guide will bring you to places you would never get to on another trip. Our guide ALan and driver Marion were great ensuring everyone was catered for. The first two day cycling a little challenging but after that it was down hill. We visited local areas off the beaten track tasted great food.Just a note when buying fish in restaurants just check it's not sold by the weight! October a great time to go not too hot very pleasant for cycling and exploring villages.
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Getting to the top of the hill in Havr.
What did you think of your group leader?
Alan was excellent always looking out for us ensuring the day was packed with cycling fest times food etc. His local knowledge was vert interesting and he was always on hand if you needed more information or assistance.

Wonderful way to see a beautiful country

(Review obtained from Tour Operator)

This Croatian trip was a wonderful mix of unspoilt countryside, sparkling clear seas and historical walled towns and cities. It was also a good mix of fairly challenging hills, flatter coastal roads and time for rests in cafes, ferries and short trips in the minibus. Our guide Alan organised and managed the whole holiday very skilfully, with good support from our driver. The ice creams were the best I’ve tasted since being in Italy, and the seafood and roast vegetables were also a highlight.
I was inspired by people on the trip, not only because they were older on average than on other trips (mid/late 50s to late 60s) and doing well on the rides, but also dealing well with challenges in their lives.
Alan our guide Alan was excellent, he was patient, thoughtful, encouraging, helpful, amiable, good humoured, made good decisions, very well organised without rushing us and explained clearly our route and day ahead.
October is a good time of year to go, not too hot but still warm, we had day temperatures around 20-25C.
I thought the ferries and minibus added to the holiday and the latter came in useful to avoid rain and lightening on the rainy day. Accommodation was adequate, fine for a cycling holiday. The guided tours of Split and Dubrovnik that were origanised for us (extra charge for the latter) were very interesting and worth doing. I’d recommend getting to Split a day earlier to explore the walled Palace area, including the bell tower if you have a head for heights.

It really was as described on the label - fabulously clear seas teeming with fish, gorgeous vistas of islands, vines and historic villages, with hidden gems of frescos and facades. We rolled out over beautiful quiet lanes and trails, reassured with water and snack stops and very clear landmarks enabling us all To reach our destination in our own time having enjoyed sun drenched countryside and seascapes. Thanks to Alan and Marion it all ran like clockwork- just time for super gelato before a ferry, light fading as we entered old Dubrovnik enhancing the city’s beautiful architecture. Lovely fish, more fish and pork kebabs overlooking beautiful ports. What’s not to like! Give it a go....
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Reaching the first tough summit and realising I am still pedalling the bike with gentle encouragement!
What did you think of your group leader?
Lovely thoughtful person- at ease and aware of all of the party. Good organisation skills ensured a very smooth trip.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Early October weather was perfect- warm enough still to Enjoy a week of fresh air and swims . We saw one amazing storm from the van but we’re back on bikes within the hour riding home happily!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
A super trip with good bikes and great guide and support staff.

What a fab trip. Great weather, wonderful company, and the gorgeous Dalmatian coast. The ride exceeded our expectations, it was a little tougher than we expected, some of the hills were longer than we expected, but always doable. Our guide Marijo was the best, full of information, little stories about the places we saw. He was helpful and kind to a fault, we couldn’t praise him highly enough.
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The long sweeping descent on day 3 of the ride. The wonderful homestead visit.
What did you think of your group leader?

We have recently returned from our first cycling holiday with [the tour operator] and whilst I don't usually do reviews this time I felt compelled to write to say how impressed we were. Fantastic scenery, great cycling, a lovely group and exceptional guide.
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
On the second day of cycling, making it up an extremely long uphill section in mid 30s heat. It was worth the effort for the views & downhill section.
What did you think of your group leader?
Our exceptional leader Marijo was great fun and always went the extra mile even on his day off. He was always very encouraging and took great care of everyone's needs.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
As previous reviewers have said make sure your preparation includes plenty of hills.

Just a big thank you to Marijo for giving us such great memories of Croatia.

We had a wonderful time cycling the Dalmation Coast. The scenery was amazing, the group were all lovely, our tour leader Marijo was fantastic and the food was great. We loved every minute of it and we had pretty good weather too this late in the season.
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
All the cycling - even those dreaded long uphills, the sheer exuberance of the downhills made up for it! Also going to Dubrovnik was a highlight for me.
What did you think of your group leader?
Marijo, our tour leader was excellent - nothing was too much trouble, he had a good sense of humour and his organisational skills were first class. He always had a Plan B in case of unexpected things occurring.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Do a bit of hill training before you go - there are some long ascents (10km or more) but quite doable if you are prepared for it. I was the oldest person in our group and I made it up all the climbs.

Cycling the Dalmation Coast

Ravi Gulati
(Review obtained from Tour Operator)

The Croatia coast line is an excellent place for cycling from the Istria peninsula up north all the way to the southern city of Dubrovnik. While this trip only covered the islands from Split to Dubrovnik, we did the first part across by hovercraft from Venice to Ravingy and then drove over 4 days hopping the islands to Split where we joined the group. The official trip had four days of biking. I would recommend that cyclist / travellers who have the time should do the entire length of Croatia along the islands. Car rental is very cost effective in Croatia. Any way you do it, it is a very scenic ride all the way down the coast.
Croatia is a scenic country, appears well managed, with good tourism infrastructure and friendly people. The break up of Croatia from Yugoslavia and the sacrifice made by its citizens was moving but the effort has paid off.
Mario Stojanovic (our group leader) was a absolute delight to lead the team. He made the trip enjoyable. He is very capable and stitched the group together. Can't thank him enough.
It can get very hot and only four star hotels have air conditioning. We had forest fires and route , ferry changes, and other natural disasters but Mario always had a plan B. For me the food servings was big quantities but the quality of cuisine did not impress especially if you compare it with French or Italian food. The quality of Croatian wine was acceptable, actually better than I expected.
Great team leaders make great trips - thank you Mario.

This was my first time in Croatia, the trip itinerary was busy, but ensured you experienced national parks and all the beauty of the Islands and the Coast.
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Finally, meeting with Marijo from the ferry, after a much maligned journey out to Split
What did you think of your group leader?
Marijo was absolutely excellent, making sure we were all comfortable and enjoying the days activities, and ensuring we all were all safely on our way to the variety of destinations at the end of the trip. He was also very knowledgeable and was eager to share his country with us.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
If you have the time and the cycling capability, joining this trip up with the Bosnia and Montenegro cycling trip provides a great way to experience the Balkans
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Austrian Airlines is not a good option for this trip, they run connections which are consistently late, given this trip is 8 days, much better to try to get there directly or with more transfer time to allow for more issues

Great introduction to Croatia

David Davis
(Review obtained from Tour Operator)

A very well organised trip, the bulk of the cycling distance clocked up early on in the week, the scenery was fabulous as was most of the trip. I'd not been to Croatia before and I'd happily return. Alan our guide had it all very well organised, a perfect approach as you never felt under any time pressure to get a move on or anything else! A good group too all added to make this a superb trip, the only downside was you have to come home when you really fancy staying on a few more days!!
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Hard to pick out one in particular but probably the last day of cycling along the pelesjac peninsular coast - you just wanted it to go on and on.
What did you think of your group leader?
Alan, one of the best leaders I've experienced (I've been on 10+ Exodus trips and usually had good leaders), there was never any time pressure, everything happened (seemingly to us) as though it was effortless. A perfect balance of information, experience and great people skills. He stood out for all the right reasons.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
It will be over before you know it so consider adding time onto the beginning/end of the trip if you can to experience a bit more of Croatia. Expect Dubrovnik to be full of tourists - but enchanting all the same.

I had a great time cycling around Croatia. Our guide was excellent as was the scenery and food. Cycling is a great way to see the country and enjoy the views. We went swimming every day after the ride and was taken to lovely restaurants in the evening.
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Cycling along the coastline in the sunshine and seeing the lovely clear waters.
What did you think of your group leader?
Marijo was fantastic, very friendly and welcoming. You couldn't have asked for a better leader.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
There are hills so make sure you have a good level of fitness. I used the support bus one morning as it was a steep climb in over 30 degrees which was too much for me. The food was really nice and everyone in the group was lovely and we all had a nice time.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
You must visit Croatia. It's really beautiful and the people are welcoming.

Fantastic Tour of the Croatian Islands

Laura Robertson
(Review obtained from Tour Operator)

My partner & I had a super time cycling round the Croatian islands in June 2018. Our tour leader, Mario, was fantastic and nothing was too much trouble for him. It was very well organised and the itinerary was busy but it meant we got to see a lot. Some of the views from the cycle were fantastic. One thing I would say is it is very hilly and I would maybe rate it more than a moderate. On the second day of cycling there was a 25km uphill climb which was pretty tough in the heat. There are plenty of stops though and no one is left behind. There is also a support bus for anyone that does not fancy the hills and you can join in the cycle from the top of the hill. The first accommodation was a need of refurbishment and a little disappointing. The room was pretty basic. The other two hotels were nice, especially the one in Lumbarda. The restaurants we went to were all really nice and we got to sample lots of local dishes. Overall I would recommend this trip - we had a super time and great memories from it.
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
It was a real sense of achievement to reach the top of the hill of the second days cycling and the views were amazing!
What did you think of your group leader?
Our tour leader, Mario, was super and really looked after the whole group. He shared lots of local knowledge with us and was really organised and he ensured everything went smoothly for us.

This was a holiday to remember! The organisation of the whole experience was exemplary and the leader, Dino never stopped working to make sure that everything worked well. The views were constant and breathtaking. Cycling on day 1 and 2 is more challenging than on the other days but there is always support from the bus if needed. The group was lovely and a mix of singles and couples.
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
conquering the hills! Seeing the views, drinking it all in.
What did you think of your group leader?
Our group leader was great. His organisation was brilliant. He worked constantly - nothing was too much trouble and he was smiling and kind throughout. He made sure that the strong cyclists and those who weren’t so strong all had a holiday and enjoyed the trip!

(Review obtained from Tour Operator)

It was my first holiday as a single woman and I was a little nervous. Now I can’t wait to book my next trip with exodus. The guide Alan was excellent - I always felt well looked after and if I found myself a bit behind on some of the climbs I never felt under pressure or at risk of getting lost. Alan’s descriptions of difficulty and distance were a great help and accurate. There was an age range of 20 -70 but we all got on brilliantly. Meals were all taken together ( the possibility of having to eat alone had been another concern for me before booking). The scenery was stunning,, the sea was warm and beautifully clear, motorists were considerate, the food was great and the local people lovely. Personally I preferred the countryside to Dubrovnik but I’m a country girl - there was the most amazing sweet shop in Dubrovnik old town tho ?
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The people - the group I was cycling with and the locals were so supportive cheering everyone as we made it to the top of a tough climb. The views from the top of the hills and swimming in the lake a a few of the best bits - too many other good bits to list them all.
What did you think of your group leader?
Alan was great. always felt safe, knew where I was going, I felt fine at the back even if I couldn’t always see the person in front because I knew I wouldn’t be left behind . Alan would always keep track of where everyone was. He spent time with everyone in the group cycling at their pace not trying to get people to speed up or slow down. There were briefings often so we all knew what was happening.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
I considered taking my own road bike - dont - the bikes were excellent and fitted perfectly even though I’m only 5’3 . Even a hybrid bike would not have coped with to few off road sections. They also provided a handle bar bag that was really useful. Take a cash card or cash - as well as credit card - we used cash for most meals and some places didn’t take cards at all.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thank you for making my first holiday for 5 years such a fantastic experience.

(Review obtained from Tour Operator)

The trip was well planned and executed by Exodus, the cycling was varied and contained just the right amount of challenge to make it interesting. Late September was a good time to visit as the days were sunny without being too hot and the evenings mild, places (with the exception of Dubrovnik) were not too busy either. Do take advantage of the free day to visit Mijet island - its well worth a visit and dont forget your swimming gear!
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Visiting the old City of Dubrovnik at twilight on our penultimate day. If you havent been it is a truly beautiful place. Do visit the hilltop overlooking Dubrovnik too - either by walking up or the cable car, there is an interesting Bosnian War museum there and a surprisingly good cliff top cafe (not for vertigo sufferers!) with stunning views.
What did you think of your group leader?
Mario was fairly new to the job but proved himself to be enthusiastic, hard working, good humoured and nothing was too much trouble for him. Very good leader.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Avoid the Hotel Sumratin in Dubrovnik if at all possible. At the time of our staying there it was ranked by Trip Advisor as 62 out of 68 hotels in Dubrovnik.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
This was my sixth Exodus trip and was well up to their normal good standard, unfortunately a great trip ended on a slightly sour note when we were accomodated in the Hotel Sumratin in Dubrovnik on out last two nights, however, Exodus have assured me that they will discontinue using it in future

I would highly recommend this cycling holiday. Not only do you get to take in the breathe taking views and islands on 2 wheels, but there is plenty of time to relax and explore whilst providing a few challenging hills with the reward of a stunning view at the top! Our guide Alan and driver Danny were attentive, informative and in my top tour leaders :) With the support of the cycle trailer and a bus to accommodate anyone who can't or doesn't want to complete a hill (or if you are injured) there is comfort in knowing this tour is still a holiday and not a fitness challenge. The island are beautiful, mainly tarmac back quiet roads, the locals friendly, the food delicious.....a few hotels were very dated and need of modernisation and I'm glad I left the trip early and didn't spend 2 nights in the Dubrovnik accommodation. I would add that I considered Explore tour and the 70km day put me off.....we saw this group along the way they arrived in at 8pm on their long day... and noted they did not have a support vehicle like Exodus and some of their group were not happy about this.
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

If you'd like a highly scenic ride in a lovely country, then this is the trip for you. We cycled up and down hills with amazing sea views, and visited stunning towns, villages and vineyards. We stayed at some lovely places, swam in the sea and ate very well. Alan was one of the best leaders I've experienced, and our group was lovely. They ranged in age from 30s to 70s; some were strong cyclists, others not. However all were catered for, and the support bus was always available. There were no long transports, and the ferry trips were great. The climate was pleasantly hot, and the wine flowed.
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The islands were great, especially Korcula, and the town of Korcula- a medieval gem. Dubrovnik is unforgettable.
What did you think of your group leader?

This is our first Exodus trip , me and the wife fear we have experienced the best trip on our first tour! This trip was outstanding. The guide Marijo was fantastic, he is professional, knowledgeable and great fun! A real asset to Exodus. The trip is great for the leisure cyclist, mixing the right amount of cycling with sightseeing and socialising. The country is truly beautiful, the people have a sunny temperament which matches the fantastic weather. We met a wonderful and diverse group of people, who were great company and a joy to holiday with. We are now already planning our next Exodus trip!
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
So many it's hard to single one out. Mijet is a must, do not be tempted to take the rest day as it is a very gentle days cycling and you will miss out on a stunning island and a great day out. The first two days are the hardest but you do need to justify all the great food and drink you consume.
What did you think of your group leader?
Marijo will be an impossible act to follow. He is so personable that any little problem with the ferries, restaurants etc are so smoothly dealt with that it all ends in handshakes and laughter. In danger of missing a connecting ferry which would have meant a three hour wait, he sweet talked a van driver in front of us to let us take his place on the ferry! Marijo is not just a guide but becomes part of the holiday group, great fun on and off duty! Truly an exceptional guide. Tome the driver needs a out shout as well. A very happy chap who couldn't do enough for everyone. He also distills a mean homemade grappa!!
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Do not expect too much from the hotels and breakfasts! The holiday is great value for money. When you consider the amount of great staff care, great equipment, the cost of the ferries and the comfortable van used to carry us and the bikes, savings had to be made somewhere. This is a full on holiday so you do not spend any time at the hotels anyway! Best tip: most restaurants / bars don't like credit cards. So take cash or get it from ATMs
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Not really, perhaps Exodus could try and find a better hotel in Dubrovnik, as this is definitely the weak link.

Cycling the Dalmation Coast - May 2017

(Review obtained from Tour Operator)

Once again Exodus has delivered a fabulous holiday in a beautiful destination. We highly recommend this trip and could easily have spent more time cycling the islands and exploring the coast. The cycling was interesting with a variety of terrain - some long but not steep climbs, which meant some refreshing descents. The moderate rating felt right. We'll definitely go back to explore Dubrovnik and other parts of Croatia. Can't recommend this trip highly enough!
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
It's difficult to decide on a single inspirational moment as Croatia proved to be a beautiful country with stunning scenery everywhere! Cycling along the coastal roads of Korcula and the vineyards of Peljesac Peninsula were particularly memorable - the views are spectacular. We walked to the top of cable car in Dubrovnik - well worth it for a magnificent view of the old city. We were blessed with excellent weather and great company with our group. This holiday was all the better for having people to share it with.
What did you think of your group leader?
Alan Skulic was excellent - well organised, knowledgeable, reassuring, calm, sociable and at ease with everyone in our group. Most of all, he had a great sense of humour - he understood the British sense of humour, apparently as a result of watching British comedy programmes when growing up.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Yes! Do it! It's a beautiful country and the holiday will stay in our memories forever. We are leisure cyclists and were a bit intimidated by the hill climbs but Alan was reassuring and supportive. We faced the challenge and feel much more confident about overcoming future cycling challenges. And we were rewarded with stunning scenery. The roads are quiet and the road surfaces are in much better condition than those at home, which again made cycling much more pleasurable. We highly recommend taking the optional trip to Mljet and the guided walk around Dubrovnik. Ana, our guide was excellent.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We went in mid-May and it was warm enough for us! It's important to drink plenty and make the most of breakfast and snack stops - especially if going when the weather is even warmer.

As a group of six ladies who are hobby cyclists, there was some in trepidation, but we needn't have been concerned. The support of our guide, Marijo and the group, along with our driver, Dani, made for a highly enjoyable week and so much was packed in. We needed to cycle each day to work off the lovely food we ate each day
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
For me the countryside was so beautiful. It was really quiet with not much traffic and the smells of cypress trees, rosemary and jasmine were just sublime. When there were hills ( and boy there were some!) the encouragement of the group was tremendous and don't forget at the top are some fantastic views, but a glorious ride down!!
What did you think of your group leader?
Mario was so supportive to all the different abilities within our cycle group. Not once did he get impatient or make you feel awkward. He was always informative in his briefings without making you feel patronised. He could enjoy a laugh with the group and if there was any language barrier in the shops etc he was always there to help out. He especially sourced one restaurant for my croatian friend who wanted a particular dish and several craft beer cafe for our brewer friend. He was the element that made our holiday so special.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
I am glad I took padded cycling shorts and although I had done some training before, perhaps I should have done more to be able to cycle all those hills. I did take the bus on one occasion but was never made to feel a failure. Make sure you're happy to cycle in some traffic although in Croatia it is quite quiet. Don't forget your cycling gloves (some in our group did). We also asked Exodus before we went if there were bike bags, they said no, but infact there were bags to sit on the front of your handle bars, very useful to carry sunscreen or jackets etc. Also take your own water bottle. Pack light, as you don't want to pack and unpack full suitcases.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
The hotels are basic but clean and breakfast is probably not the same standard as we are used to in central Europe , but quite adequate for a day's cycling. In the evenings you mainly eat with the group at some lovely restaurants, but you're not obliged to and can go solo if you wish. When you reach Dubrovnik, you will need money for extra trips (which you will do on your own) e.g. the bus from the hotel to the town, The walls of the Old City, cable car and boat trip to Lokrum. Dubrovnik is busy as many of the cruise ships call in, but still a fascinating place. If you just want peace & quiet go to Lorum and take your swimming costume for a swim in the beautiful Adriatic sea. Here there are some lovely restaurants and even sunbeds. If you are in a group or on your own don't hesitate to go, can't remember when I've laughed so much!!

An amazing week of cycling and island hopping along one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe. Brilliant local food, historic old towns and stunning coastal and mountain scenery to pedal through.

Arriving at the top of a long climb and having a long downhill to look forward to, followed by a dip in the sea to cool off.

This was a great guided tour! Our days were very well planned and organised. The support vehicle was always there if we needed it. The group of 9 was just the right size. People were punctual and all about the same in athleticism, so not much waiting was required.
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Making it to the top of the 10 km hill! Also the day trip cycling through Mljet National Park. This was so incredibly beautiful and was an easy ride, after two difficult days of cycling. Lots of relaxing time and just enjoying the beautiful scenery.
What did you think of your group leader?
Our group leader, Alan, was exceptional! He was friendly, helpful, encouraging, and very direct in his instructions. He gave a brief amount of history but not too much, was very accomodating with requests, and was an all-round gentleman.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
This is rated as "3" or "Moderate". I think it could easily be more difficult than that, but the bikes were in very good condition, and made the hills bearable.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Seeing the average age of our group was 57 years, the option of electric assist bikes, or padded seats, or upright handlebars would have been welcomed. The next star rating for our hotels in Hvar and Dubrovnik would also have been appreciated
