Alsace is on the eastern border of France with Germany and is undoubtedly one of the world’s best wine destinations. However keen you are to experience the stunning wines, you can’t help but be struck by Alsace’s beauty. It has been awarded the title of World’s Best Region for Wine Tourism for good reason – it ticks all the boxes: natural beauty; quality & diversity of wines; amazing hotels & restaurants; historical & cultural attractions; dedicated cycling tour pathways – yes, yes, yes, yes & yes!

  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts in Strasbourg where there are many arrival options. You can use the high-speed train network (TGV) and perhaps arrive from Paris (journey time to Strasbourg is just over 2 hours). There is an airport in Strasbourg (SXB); however, this is a small airport, and so may not offer the best options. Another good option is 42 km (26 mi) away, the Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport (FKB) in Germany. Transfers are offered by the tour operator from either of these airports or the Strasbourg TGV station.

The tour ends in Mulhouse; the closest airport is EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, a unique airport in that it is run by both France and Switzerland with significant input from Germany. As such the airport has 3 IATA codes (BSL, MLH, EAP). The tour operator can transfer you to this airport or the Mulhouse TGV on departure day.

  • How long is the tour? How many days cycling?

The tour is 7 days long with 6 days cycling.

  • What's the tour like?

The cycling is mixed, with days of flat riding along valley floor shoulders alongside endless rows of unfathomably steep vineyards, interspersed with days of moderately hilly climbs. This tour can be enjoyed by anyone with a little cycling experience, knowing that the support vehicle is never far away.

  • If I'm travelling on my own, do I have to pay more?

If you wish to have your own room then a single supplement is payable.

  • Is there any car parking available?

If you have a vehicle the tour operator can arrange secure parking for your car and return you to it after the tour.

  • What are the arrangements with food?

All evening meals are included, and restaurants are carefully selected for cuisine and ambience; the operator favours those with a strong regional flavour. All meals include a starter, main course and dessert; some will have an additional cheese course. The tour operator is happy to arrange for the restaurants to cater for specific dietary requirements, allergies, etc. Wine is included with the meals, again favouring the local appellations of which there are so many! Breakfasts are included, usually continental although many hotels will provide a buffet-style breakfast. Lunch is not included in town, to allow opportunities to explore the many delicious options; picnic lunches are included on the days when lunch breaks take place out in the countryside.

  • Is a bike included?

Yes, the tour operator provides lightweight alloy framed Trek ‘hybrid’ touring bicycles with 24 indexed gears, fully equipped with lock, pump and toolkit (although the guides will generally be on hand to fix punctures and minor mechanical problems). For carrying the items you might need during the day (camera, wallet, windbreaker etc.) a capacious handlebar bag is fitted, which also features a large map pocket. These clip on and off the bike in a flash so that you can always take your valuables with you when off the bike. The bikes are meticulously maintained and the tour operator keeps a wide range of sizes; female specific saddles are also available.

The tour operator also carries rain capes should they be required (but hopefully not!). For certain tours, they also have available 27-speed drop-handlebar race-style bikes, and tandems may also be available on certain tours by special request.

  • Is a helmet included?

The tour operator does not provide helmets automatically, as they find people prefer their own if they want to wear one, and sizing and fit is quite personal; however, they always have helmets available for use.

  • What are the guides and support like?

You will have two guides on every tour; one cycling with the group and one in the minibus which will follow the group. The bus carries all luggage not required for the day's ride and will always be available for anyone at any point during the day. If for instance, you want to take a day off the bike, or if a particular day seems a little hard, the bus will take you for as long or as little as you wish it to.

To ensure maximum flexibility for all riders, everybody is provided with detailed route maps for each day, and both guides are easily contactable by mobile phone. The guides are enthusiastic experts on the local area and will be able to sort out any problems or special requests that you might have.

  • Is there a minimum age?

Yes, 18 is the minimum age for the tour.

  • What's the maximum group size?

The tours are kept to a small size of just 16 participants.
