  • Where does the tour start and finish?

The tour starts and finishes in Tathra located on the NSW Sapphire Coast.

Tathra is a 6 hour drive from Sydney, 7 hours from Melbourne and 3 hours from Canberra. You can also fly in via Merimbula Airport (MIM).

  • How long is the tour? How many cycling days?

The tour is 6 days long with 5 cycling days.

  • What's the trip like?

This supported cycle trip involves 5 days of cycling over mountainous terrain. Daily activity is usually between 5 and 8 hours but some days might be longer depending on your overall pace. Being a self-guided trip you determine the pace and schedule. You will need an excellent level of fitness and good health and be a very confident and capable cyclist to complete the distances. You will be ascending around 2500m (8202ft) during the 5 days of cycling, essentially travelling from the top of Australia to the sea.

Daily ascents range from 455m to 806m (1492- 2644ft) each day, with descents of up to 1300m (4265ft). The maximum gradient is 15.4% on the Beloka Hill descent although on this descent the average is 9.4% over 3km (1.8mi) ‑ mainly the average gradient is around 1‑3%. While the vast majority of the route is on sealed roads there is a 14km (8.6mi) stretch on a dirt road with cattle grids, and a few shorter sections on dirt roads (2 and 4km/1.2mi and 2.4mi).

Be prepared for potential variable weather conditions which can also add to the timing and comfort of a trip, for example riding into a headwind will take more time than when the wind is behind you. You will need to be comfortable and confident cycling on the road. High-visibility clothing is essential. If you use an electric bike, the grading on this trip is moderate.

  • What is a supported cycling trip?

A supported cycling trip in Australia is ideal for those of you who love being able to explore at your own pace, while still enjoying the camaraderie of like‑minded travellers and appreciating the support from a knowledgeable driver/escort.

On a supported cycling holiday you get to experience the freedoms of a self‑guided bike tour with the social aspects that come with a small group tour. Along for the adventure is your driver/escort, who provides daily luggage transfers, itinerary briefings, coffee breaks and picnic lunches while also offering the peace of mind that comes with break down assistance and battery charging.

A supported bike trip is an unforgettable Australian experience.

  • Will there be luggage transfers?

Your luggage will be transferred between each hotel. Please keep your luggage to one bag per person, that weighs less than 15kg.

  • What's the weather like?

This trip travels from Jindabyne at 952m (3123ft) above sea level to Tathra on the coast, and the climate in these regions can vary greatly. The trip runs between October and April so you will be cycling over the summer months and autumn/ spring. Temperatures average in the mid‑high twenties over summer but can reach the 30s. Nighttime temperatures, particularly in the snowy mountains region can still be cool in summer (its not unusual for it to hover at times between 0‑5 degrees celsius) so you will need to pack clothes to stay cool in the daytime and warm at night. Early and late season departures may encounter snow or ice on the road, particularly near the snowy mountains.

Thanks guys for coordinating our cycle trip. We loved the lesser-travelled paths that you led us on. The different styles of accommodation were all excellent, from the motel by the lake to the glorious B&B in remote farm country. Our bags were always there waiting for us. Cycling is a great way to experience our beautiful country from the top of Kosciuszko to the sea. Thank you again for this wonderful experience.

The Kosciuszko to the Sea Cycle was a challenging ride which was made possible by the careful route-planning, well-located accommodation and great logistical support of [the tour operator].

What a challenging ride, fantastic at every step, despite fracturing my arm on my 25-year-old Mongoose day!!!. We got very lucky with the weather. Stayed at some great places that we would never have found ourselves. Thank you.
