  • How long is the tour? How many days of riding?

This tour is 6 days long, with 4 riding days.

  • How many riders will be in the group?

Groups can be from 2 to 15 riders. For groups of 9 or more, a second guide joins the tour.

  • Is there a minimum age for this tour?

Yes. Riders must be 18 years old by the time the tour starts.

  • What's the tour like?

You’ll ride a total of 242 km over four cycling days, with more than 75% of the route covering mountainous terrain. Kyushu, Japan’s southern island, offers a rugged and remote cycling experience that’s rare in such a developed country. Expect daily climbs—both big and small—on mostly quiet, scenic country roads. Along the way, you'll stop at cultural sites and immerse yourself in rural life. Afternoons allow time to explore towns and enjoy onsen. While bathing facilities are available throughout the tour, any related costs are not included, but our team is happy to help you make arrangements. With your guide’s local knowledge, you'll always know what’s ahead in terms of distance and difficulty, supported by constant water, refreshments, and a vehicle following at all times.

    Suitability

This tour blends challenging climbs with relaxed riding. Each day includes ascents—some steep, some gradual—balanced by flat and downhill sections. A basic level of fitness, confidence on a bike, and solid handling skills will enhance your experience. The support vehicle is always nearby for those who need a break. Riding is almost entirely on paved roads and not intended for off-road cyclists.

    Biking Conditions

The route sticks mostly to small, well-paved country roads, though some brief sections on busier main roads are unavoidable, especially near towns or attractions. Traffic is light for most of the journey, and we’ve chosen the quietest and most scenic paths possible. Where available, we ride in designated bike lanes. Occasional rough patches may occur, and weather can change quickly—light rain showers are common. We typically ride rain or shine, though adjustments can be made depending on comfort and conditions. It’s all part of the adventure!

  • Am I safe?

The tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue. But to a large degree, riders must be responsible for their own safety during the tour. It is therefore compulsory that you take out travel insurance that will cover you for a cycling tour.

  • Where does the tour start and finish?

The tour begins at the hotel in Fukuoka which is near Hakata train station. The closest airport is Fukuoka Airport (FUK).

The tour ends in Beppu with the Oita Airport (OIT) being the closest.

  • Do I have to pay if travelling alone?

You are not required to pay a surcharge for travelling alone. The tour operator will arrange for you to share accommodation with another traveller of the same gender. If you cannot be matched, they will provide a single room at no extra charge. If you prefer not to share, a single supplement is payable to guarantee your own room.

  • Are helmets included when hiring a bike?

Yes, if you're hiring a bike from the operator, a complimentary helmet is provided, although you are welcome to bring your own if you wish.

We really got to experience Japan through the bike tour by seeing the magnificent countryside, eating the local traditional food, enjoying the accommodation, and soaking in the Onsens at the end of every day. Our guides also made our tour a memorable experience. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

This is a very scenic ride through the southernmost major islands. Hills and Dale's galore. Leader Eric a 20plus veteran in Japan provides a lot of cultural contexts. We have done a number of rides, this might have been the best.
