  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts at Newcastle. If you are planning to arrive by air, there is an airport at Newcastle with direct services to Newcastle Central train station. For those arriving by car, you will be able to leave your vehicle at your accommodation, or if the train is your preferred transport mode, you can either take a taxi from the station to your accommodation or it is just a short 10-15 minute walk away.

The tour ends in Edinburgh where a tour representative will meet you ar around 16:30. You will then either start your return train journey from here or you will be transported back to Newcastle. Please do not book any return trains from Edinburgh prior to 18.00 and return trains from Newcastle prior to 20.00.

There is a supplement payable for airport transfers.

  • How long is the tour? How many days cycling?

The tour is 5 days long with 4 days of cycling.

  • What's the tour like?

The route has some sections of urban riding, on quiet roads or purpose built cycle paths, but most of the route follows quiet country lanes, cycle tracks, and some bridleways.

There are a few off-road sections, with tracks across grassy fields or farm roads. Being a National Cycle Network route, there are no “technical” off-road sections. With a mix of tarmac and some gravel or stoney/grass surfaces the ride can be completed on almost any type of bike. Some riders will find that with a little extra care the off-road sections can be ridden on a road bike with touring tyres fitted, however there are tarmac alternatives to the standard route if preferred.

    Is this suitable for you?
The ride is graded as 3-4 or Moderate/Active. It is suitable for the leisure cyclist who rides frequently, and who’s comfortable with some moderately challenging climbs. Some of the terrain may vary, potentially including sections of uneven or unpaved ground.

This tour is suitable for those who keep themselves relatively fit and maybe enjoy an afternoon out on the bikes at the weekend. Your preference may be for flatter terrain, but you don’t mind tackling some hills, the occasional steep climb and some varying terrain (forest tracks, gravel paths etc.). It might be however that on some days the distances will be longer than a standard grade 3 trip, or some of the climbs may be quite challenging. You may also require some previous experience of tackling some uneven / unpaved ground to comfortably and safely ride certain sections of the route.

  • Is bike hire included?

Bikes are not included however  hybrid and electric bikes are available for hire.

The hybrid bikes are generally Giant Roam or Liv Rove with a large 30 speed gear range, semi-slick tyres and a relaxed riding position. The electric bikes are generally Giant Entour E+ Disc pedal assist bikes with batteries suitable for the daily distances on this holiday. Both models of bikes come with either a standard cross bar or step through frame.

Helmets and panniers are provided with all hire bikes along with an emergency repair kit including a spare innertube, bike pump and bike lock.

Loved the contrast

Loved the contrast between the first two days of sea and beaches and the third and fourth days of rural views and some hills.

Beautiful scenery

Amble to Berwick Upon Tweed was our favourite day – beautiful scenery and good weather.

Everyone was very helpful when planning the trip, including when we had to call for assistance on our last day, due to our friend being taken poorly. The app was really useful and we made good use of it!

We would like to say a special thank you to our transfer driver, he was very understanding and went well over his usual working hours to assist us in an unexpected situation.
