  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts and ends in Cape Town, South Africa.  Fly in/out of Cape Town International Airport (CPT).

The start hotel is approximately 25 minutes’ drive from the airport. The operator provides free arrival transfers for all customers from Cape Town International Airport to the start hotel. Please note, unless specified otherwise, the transfers will be to the start hotel and will be on the date on which the tour starts; transfers to other hotels in the same city and/or on different dates may attract an extra charge. Transfers should be booked at least two weeks before the tour starts.

Please note: If you are travelling on flights via Johannesburg, you will need to collect your baggage in Johannesburg, even if your bag has been checked all the way through to Cape Town (and even if you are told that you do not need to pick it up). After collecting the bag, you are required to clear customs, and you should then drop it off at the bag drop for the onward flight. This only applies to the outbound flight – you do not need to do this at the end of the trip on the return flight.

  • How long is the tour? How many cycling days?

The tour is 12 days long with 9 days cycling.

  • What's the tour like?

This tour is classified Road and Activity Level 3 (Moderate).

There are nine days of cycling with an average distance of approximately 34mi (55km) per day with full vehicle support. Cycling durations stated in the itinerary are approximations and vary depending on the group’s pace.

This is a classic road tour with some relaxed rides and the opportunity to tackle a few challenging climbs. You'll primarily be riding on good quality paved roads with a few excursions onto hard-packed graded roads. This trip uses main roads, which can be busy, but the scenery is wonderful.

  • How many guides are in the group?

There will be a local cycling leader and an assistant leader driving the support vehicle. For groups with 9 passengers upwards, a second sweeper cycling support leader will also accompany groups.

  • Do I need vaccinations?

There are no required vaccinations. However, recommended vaccinations include hepatitis A, tetanus, typhoid, cholera, hepatitis B, rabies and tuberculosis. You will also need a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you’re arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission or transiting for more than 12 hours through a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Please confirm with your doctor or travel clinic.

Malaria prophylaxis is essential if travelling in the greater Kruger area; seek advice from your doctor or travel clinic about which tablets to take. The rest of South Africa, including the Garden Route, has a low risk of malaria.

Dengue fever, a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes, is also a known risk in places visited. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available, so it is recommended you take the usual precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

  • Is a bike included?

Yes, a Giant Giant Escape 2 Disc (touring/hybrid) is provided as part of the tour.

    1. The equipment remains the property of the supplier and you may not sell, hire out or part possession with the equipment.

    2. You must not misuse the equipment and must return it in the same condition as when received (ordinary wear and tear excepted). The supplier is entitled to charge for any damage caused to the equipment during the period of hire.

    3. You must ensure that the equipment is adequately secured when not in use. In the event of the equipment being lost or stolen, you may be liable for the replacement value of the equipment

    4. You must not use the equipment whilst under the influence of drink or drugs and should immediately notify the Supplier in the event of breakdown or loss.

  • Do I have the wear/bring a helmet?

Wearing a helmet is mandatory for anyone taking part in this cycling holiday. Group members must bring their own helmets, as they are not available for hire.

Cycling of all kinds has its dangers and accidents can happen from time to time. Please ensure that you are properly prepared for the riding you are going to undertake.

    Recommended Cycling Clothing

Padded cycling shorts (with loose 'over-shorts' where recommended), breathable clothing, and a lightweight waterproof/windproof top. Shoes with relatively stiff soles are better for biking but are not essential unless you are cycling long distances. Most people want to carry certain items with them during the day while cycling, for this we recommend a large bum-bag or small close-fitting daysack.

  • Should I have travel insurance?

Yes. It is a condition of joining this holiday that you must be fully insured against medical and personal accident risks (to include repatriation costs and air ambulance or helicopter rescue services where appropriate). On arrival in destination for your trip, you will be asked to present details to your leader or local representative of your policy.

  • Tell me about the food on the trip please?

All breakfasts are included on this holiday.

For breakfast, expect continental buffets with fresh fruit, cereals, bread, yogurts and tea and coffee. On some days, the guides prepare a cooked breakfast when they have the facilities to do so. Lunches can consist of a good spread of fresh salads, cold meats, cheese, bread, condiments, fresh fruit and a selection of cold drinks. For evening meals, expect a large braai (barbecue) with lots of locally sourced steaks, sausages and vegetables. Restaurant menus are very varied and the guide will be available to recommend the best options for your personal tastes and budget. You can expect stews, pasta, curry and steaks.

Vegetarians and vegans can be well catered for on this holiday, please let us know on booking.

  • What's the weather like?

February is the hottest month in Cape Town with an average temperature of 23C (73F). June is the coldest month of the year with an average temperature of 13C (55F). At the times we run most of our trips, expect warm days with the temperatures around 20C (68F).

The best time to see the carpets of wildflowers and fruit blossoms is August and September. In summer, the southeasterly wind can blow up to 43mph (70kph) at least a few times a month. This helps to cool things off but can be a little tiring if cycling into it. The programme is flexible enough to accommodate any major changes in weather, and yet still be enjoyable.

Windy but wonderful

Amazing scenery, good food and wine (at very reasonable prices) and I laughed every day. The group was the usual [operator] mix of interesting, well-travelled people who love cycling. The long straight roads in strong winds were a challenge – even on e-bikes, but I thoroughly enjoyed the climbs (apart from one on what I think was the hottest day and trying to conserve my battery) and the downhills were very enjoyable, especially down to Barrydale with dramatic storm clouds on the horizon. Passing an ostrich was also a highlight for me. We didn’t race – it was static in a field.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were a few: Fransshoek Pass most definitely, both the climb and the long, winding downhill; the last day from Simonstown back to Capetown was wonderful and I really didn't want it to end; the coffee stop at a pretty village called Elim (the lady who served us was lovely) and watching the Wales v S Africa rugby match in a bar in Hermanus, even though Wales lost. Everybody was very kind and so very involved. I will also always remember the wise but sad words of Craig, our bus guide on Robben Island.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Peter stepped in at the last minute and I loved his attitude, humour and knowledge of history, language, books etc. Both he and Ende were wonderful company and made the trip for me.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Unless you're very fit, go for an e-bike. Not so much for the hills but to battle those incredible headwinds. I read a few novels based in S Africa and written by South Africans beforehand and on the way, which really intensified the South African experience for me. They varied from the light and amusing Tannie Maria novels by Sally Andrew (based in the Karoo) to the much darker Life and Times of Michael K by J.M Coetzee. I bought some trinkets (Christmas decorations, small animals from recycled materials etc) from street-sellers from Zimbabwe and Malawi on the way (they really need the money) and now wish I'd bought more. Oh, and look out for passing snakes - beautiful creatures.

Great Trip, Great Group

(Review obtained from Tour Operator)

An excellent trip with a great group and group leader. The itinerary enabled a real mix of cycling in the countryside and by the sea. It was a bit windy for a couple of days and there were a couple of testing climbs but it was all very manageable.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were a lot of them. The cycle to Cape Town via Chapmans Peak was pretty special, as were the whales in full view of the restaurant in Hermanus and it is always great to see penguins by the ocean.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tallis did a great job leading the group, he was very experienced and found some great bars and restaurants during the trip. He and Peitrus helped us win the quiz at Charlies Garage Craft Brewery in Simonstown which was worth a five star review on it's own!

Advice for Potential Travellers

We have been on more than 10 [operator] cycle trips and the hotels on this trip were collectively the best we have stayed in. The food and wine were excellent and very good value for money. If you have not been to Cape Town before make sure you have a couple of days at the start to have a look around, and if you can go to the top of Table Mountain it is really worth it.

Challenging yet rewarding cycling with stunning views, wine and food!

(Review obtained from Tour Operator)

If you are after a trip that is more than just cycling, this is for you! The first 3 days are tough, but you get challenging mountain pass’s followed by exhilarating downhills. You cycling through a variety of landscapes, from coastal roads and paths, to the arid desert of the little Karoo, vast countryside and plush mountainous roads. No day is the same which is nice! The food and wine is also a big bonus.

Most Inspirational Moment

Either completing the Fransshoek Pass, being at the top before you go down the incredible downhill. Or the final ride from Simons Town to Cape Town, that was by far the most beautiful cycle and we had stunning weather. I clearly can't chose as I would also reccomend booking this trip during Whale season (July-Oct) as we saw whales breaching from our hotel at breakfast, as well as mother and calf, there were a lot of whales around and they were not shy, had some amazing viewing all from the shore, no need to book a boat trip out!

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was good, listened to the group and was flexible with restaurant choices / plans which made for a relaxing feel.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This holiday felt like it had it all, cycling of course, but you also had time in the afternoons (most but not all) to enjoy the areas and relax a bit. The food was fantastic so this felt like a challenging but also relaxing holiday, which was nice!
