  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts and ends in the coastal city of Napier.

Access to Napier is relatively straight forward with an airport on the edge of the town and regular flights with Air New Zealand from all the major cities in NZ. Driving is also an option with a direct motorway link between Auckland and Napier (5 hours) or the more scenic Winery Drive from Wellington to Napier (5+ hours via the Martinborough Wine region)

  • How long is the tour? How many days riding?

The tour is 5 days long with 3 days riding.

  • What's the tour like?

The cycling is easy-going on Hawke's Bay very well-established cycling pathways that are a mix of on-road or off-road.

The total cycling distance is 105km (65.2mi) over the 3 days of riding, with more than 80% using the off road, easy and flat trails. There is an option to add on an extra 20km (12.4mi) ride if you would like on day 2 but that is completely up to you. There are lots of stops along the way and the trails are safe, mostly flat and ideal for a leisurely cycle break.

  • Can I hire a bike?

The tour operator provides lightweight alloy framed Scott ‘hybrid’ touring bicycles with 24 indexed gears, fully equipped with lock, pump and toolkit (although the guides will be on hand to fix punctures and minor mechanical problems). All
bikes are meticulously maintained and a wide range of sizes are available; female specific saddles are also available.

Helmets are not provided automatically, as most people prefer their own if they want to wear one, and sizing and fit is quite personal; however the tour operator always have helmets available for use. Tandems may also be available on certain tours by special request.

E-bikes are now available on this tour, including step through style and cross bar e-bikes (supplement applies).

  • Is there a minimum age?

Yes, 18 is the minimum age for the tour.

  • Are helmets required?

A helmet is required to be worn on all biking activities and is non-negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you won't be allowed to cycle.

The tour operator does have helmets available to hire but if you have your own this is preferable so that you are comfortable with a well-fitted helmet.

  • Are bag transfers or wine collection included?

Yes, your bags will be moved between the accommodations daily. Collection of all your wine purchases is also included.

  • What will meals be like?

Most meals are included as per the itinerary, and the tour operator carefully select the restaurants for cuisine and ambience, and favour those with a strong regional flavour where possible.

We are happy to arrange for our restaurants to cater for specific dietary requirements and allergies etc. with advance notification.

  • What if I get tired during the ride?

You have the services of a local guide cycling with you. A support bus carries all luggage and will always be available for anyone at any point during the day. If for instance you want to take a day off the bike, or if a particular day seems a little hard, the bus will take you for as long or as little as you wish it to. The guides are
enthusiastic experts on the local area and will be able to sort out any problems or special requests that you might have.
