The trip ends in Matamata (the closest town to Hobbiton), however, usually on the last day, you'll get a transfer back to Thames (the start of the tour) for your onward travel. It's possible to add an extra day to stay in Matamata for the last night of the tour, and then visit Hobbiton the next day. Here are a few things to note:
- During high season (Oct-March), Hobbiton tickets sell out, sometimes quite far in advance. But, do be aware that even out of peak season, Hobbiton is a very popular attraction with limited tickets, so make sure you book well in advance.
- Also note that Matamata itself, where you'll be staying if you book an extra night, is approximately a 15-minute drive (15km) from Hobbiton itself. Taxis are not plentiful, and are in high demand, so the cost of getting a cab from Matamata-Hobbiton can set you back something like NZD$80-120. Or, you could cycle, but it would be on the road.
- There is, at the time of writing, one departure a day (11am) that goes from the Matamata Tourist Information Centre (iSite) in the centre of town and is close to accommodation. We would recommend you book this departure as transport is included to/from Matamata town and you do not need to worry about a taxi. - You could even ride the last section of the tour to Matamata very early in the morning so that you arrive at the Matamata iSite by 1030 and could, then, join the tour without needing an extra night of lodging.

Our advice would be to ensure cyclists ask about the condition of the trail, suitable bikes for the conditions and tools needed. Also a good idea to check your itinerary to ensure all relevant details are there. Bikes were in excellent condition with clean helmets, bike bags and gel seats (if required).
