Last week, I headed to the Northern Rivers Rail Trail in NSW, Australia, with my partner to do some self-guided cycling on a completed section of this beautiful ride, which is yet to be fully linked up, but is well worth visiting right now.  We started the ride at Murwillumbah, a cruisey 1hr30 minute drive from Brisbane and ended up also riding back to the start point as we were enjoying it so much.  However, there are several companies offering shuttle services that can either collect you or drive you out to staged points so you can leisurely bike back to base at your own pace.

Rail Trail Cycling

Head to the Northern Rivers on your bike

When the ride is fully connected, it will span 132km from Murwillumbah in the north to Casino further south via coastal Byron Bay.  Right now, the sections closest to each hub are open, with the meaty middle section yet to be fully realized. The section we rode from Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek is 24km, or 48km if you go there and back and is a lovely ride on sealed paths and compacted gravel.  Much of the trail is shaded, which we appreciated in Australia's often sweaty climate and there are stops along the way for refreshments and interest off the bike.  We particularly loved Burringbar as a stop for lunch (The Barn is recommended) and to peruse the Tardis-like antiques shop.  We also got caught in a bit of rain at that point so it was a welcome stopover until the showers cleared.

You'll Know You're in Australia!

Look out for the wildlife along the way

Other wonderful highlights include a rainforest nursery (with cafe open Thurs-Sunday only), a pottery at Stokers Siding, several cafes, the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Alley Art Centre near the start of the trail and cheese tasting just off the trail.  You can find out more about what to see and shuttle companies here who also offer bike hire if needed. You can also add your support to the campaign to finish the trail at the same link.

If you're looking for a longer ride, you can ride this section of the rail trail as part of a multi day self-guided cycle tour in the region.

This part of the country boasts superb landscapes with glimpses of dramatic Wollumbin (Mt Warning) often seen along the route and in fact the first part of this multi day ride will see you riding around this iconic mountain formed from a volcanic plug of the now-extinct Tweed Volcano, on rural roads and through rainforest trails exploring the picturesque Tweed Valley towns and communities.  You'll then ride this section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail and head east out to the pristine coastline for a night before riding back inland to end the tour.

Ride with Friends or Family

Take a leisurely cycle on the rail trail

Whether you choose to cycle for just the day or embark on a longer journey of discovery, this charming region of Australia should be on your radar for a diverse and unique bike touring adventure.
