Cycle Tour Chile: Northern Austral Road
Spend 11 exhilarating days cycling the northern part of the iconic Carretera Austral on a locally-led guided tour.
Open minds, open roads and gorgeous open landscapes, Chile is a country that epitomizes nature and a willingness for an adventure. This narrow country sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes takes life slow making it perfect for exploring on a bicycle tour.
If there is one ride that really sums up this smorgasbord of natural sights in Chile it is the life-affirming Carretera Austral. Stretching out at more than 1000km (622 mi), this is one of the world’s most iconic bike routes. This enjoyable ride along gravel roads is best enjoyed slow, just as the locals would want it.
En route, you can take your pick of pristine landscapes. Fancy a fjord? No problem. Want to go white water rafting? Then hit up the Futaleufú river before casually marveling at wonderful glaciers. No matter where you head en route, this ride will leave you with a camera full of photos.
Naturally, no visit to Chile would be complete without sampling the phenomenal landscapes of Patagonia. Encompassing swathes of both Chile and Argentina, this gorgeous region is perfect for cycling and a true adventure. Riding through the glorious Torres del Paine National Park with its epic mountains and glaciers will soon make you understand why this is ranked as one of the must-see spots in Chile.
Away from this epic route, there are many other wonderful cycle rides to be enjoyed. One such route takes in Chile’s stunning lake and volcano district while allowing ample time to enjoy the fine local wines on offer.
This route takes in the Villarrica National Park where you follow the soothing River Trancura and admire not one, but three volcanoes, including the district’s tallest, Lanin Volcano. But that’s not all. This beautiful multi-day ride also includes the incredible 7-Lake Route, where you can gawp at five separate snow-capped mountains while enjoying the pristine waters around you, plus a trip to the rejuvenating Geometricas Hot Springs - much needed after some tricky pedalling.
An alternate ride also affords you the chance to admire the El Tatio Geysers -the third largest geyser field in the world and a simple must-see. Sunset here feels like an out of this world experience and one you have to pedal out to.
Another must-see are the Andes and cycling around Lake Llanquihue provides the best opportunity to enjoy sensational views across this special mountain range. Further pedalling will take you on towards the Andean Lakes where you can rack up even more memories in these picturesque spots.
No matter where you head the Chilean love of hospitality or buena onda (good vibes) means regardless the cycling route you choose, you will never be far from a hearty meal, warm smile and a fine glass of wine. And what better way can there be to end a fine day of riding or trip to this jaw-droppingly beautiful country.
