Explore the beautiful Flanders Riverland on a relaxed self-guided holiday that the whole family will never forget. The meandering rivers Dyle, Nete, Zenne and Rupel shape the landscape of the Regional Landscape Rivierenland. This scenic region is characterised by an open landscape of streams, ponds, clay pits, meadows, and historic castle domains that will be exciting to see by bike. The four small rivers are tributaries of the Scheldt and, despite being around 140 km from the sea, are influenced by the tides flowing through the Scheldt estuary. This creates a unique tidal freshwater zone with a rich diversity of habitats and wildlife.
This cycling holiday takes you through the beautiful wetland area between the diamond city of Antwerp and the charming cathedral city of Mechelen. Your journey begins in Mechelen, with its impressive Sint-Romboutstower, before following the Nete to Lier, a hidden gem between Antwerp and Mechelen.
From Lier, continue to Antwerp, the vibrant port city situated on the Scheldt. Cycle along the Scheldt River to Bornem, then follow the Rupel and Dyle rivers back to Mechelen. Along the way, enjoy a wonderful mix of nature, culture and historic towns.
With short and manageable cycling stages, there’s plenty of time to explore the cities, enjoy the scenery and take things at your own pace. This makes the tour an ideal choice for families with children and anyone looking for a leisurely cycling holiday without long days in the saddle.
