Itinerary Details

  1. Day 1Meet in Chiang Mai
  2. Day 2Chiang Mai to Lampang

After leaving Chiang Mai's traffic, you will head towards Lampang on the old highway, a tree-lined boulevard that is a real pleasure to ride along. The terrain is rolling on this section of the ride, and at just past the halfway point, there is a longish climb that gets quite steep at the end.

Lampang is called the cowboy town – you can still see horse-drawn carriages as a means of transport. On the way, you will stop and visit one of the oldest and most religious chedis in Thailand, Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, built around 1044, and the well-preserved fortified Wat Phra That Lampang Luang.

  3. Day 3Lampang to Phrae

Departing from your hotel, you’ll start with 30 kilometers of quiet roads winding through the countryside of Lampang Province. You’ll then merge onto a main throughway, where the smooth tarmac makes for a faster and more exhilarating ride. The road takes you over the Baan Mai Pass — a 20-kilometer ascent and descent surrounded by lush jungle foliage. Once you descend, you’ll turn north onto a secondary road that runs along the foothills of Phrae Province.

At around the 70-kilometer mark, you’ll take a short detour to visit Thailand’s only Bavarian-style train station, built more than a century ago by German engineers. As you continue, keep an eye out for roadside stalls selling bamboo products — a local specialty. Your final challenge is a short but steep climb into Doi Pha Klong National Park, famous for its fascinating rock formations. Finally, you’ll arrive in Phrae, the provincial capital, where you can admire a beautifully restored 19th-century mansion from the days when Phrae was at the heart of the teak trade. For dinner, you’ll head to the lively local night market.

  4. Day 4Phrae - Sri Satchanalai - Sukhothai

You’ll start the day with a 1.5-hour transfer south into the heartland of Thailand’s first kingdom — Sukhothai, which flourished from the mid-13th to late 14th century. Though its golden age was brief, this era produced some of the most beautiful examples of early Thai art and architecture. Over the next three days, you’ll explore these historic landscapes, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their rich cultural significance.

Today’s ride begins with a smooth cruise through Sri Satchanalai, a satellite city of the Sukhothai Kingdom famed for its ancient pottery kilns and remarkably preserved temple ruins. You’ll then follow the gentle flow of the Yom River, cycling past a patchwork of villages and fertile farmland that line its banks. Your destination is the modern town of Sukhothai, where you’ll stay for two nights.

The route today is entirely flat, combining narrow rural lanes in varying conditions with well-paved secondary roads. You’ll ride at a relaxed pace, soaking in the scenery and stopping to admire a few standout temple ruins along the way.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, there are more than 193 ruins surrounded by three moats and bridged by four gateways. Bikes are the best way to enjoy this ancient city, and you won’t want to forget your camera to capture some of the stunning Buddha statues. Or simply have a day off the bike and enjoy the town of Sukhothai.

Khampeng Phet, also known as the “Diamond Walled City”, was a military fortress used to help defend Sukhothai from invading armies. The moss and flower covered ruins give it a quality not seen in its more popular and restored neighbor of Sukhothai. There will be plenty of time to visit the sites by foot or bicycle. The ride to Khampeng Phet is on pleasant country roads with plenty of activity going on all around to keep your attention.

  7. Day 7Khampeng Phet to Nakorn Sawan

Today you'll head into the heartland of Thailand with a journey to Nakorn Sawan. You’ll quickly understand why Thailand is the top exporter of rice when you see the many paddies on your route today. Look out for water buffaloes wallowing in a puddle and for ducks taking a dip in a rice field. This is an area of Thailand not visited by many tourists, so you will pique the interest of locals (especially if you tell then you have ridden from Chiang Mai!), and it is a good opportunity to stop and say Sawadee!

Also, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this historic park boasts some spectacular temples that are best visited by bicycle. The town lies along the Chao Phraya River, and your hotel for the night is located on its banks.
