  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts and ends in central Christchurch where you will be collected and returned to at the end of the tour. Fly in/out of Christchurch International Airport (CHC).

  • How long is the tour? How many cycling days?

The tour is 15 days long with 12 days being guided cycling days.

On one of the rest days (Dunedin) you will have the use of your bike if you wish to explore on two wheels.  On another rest day (Queenstown) you will have endless amounts of activities to choose from, or you can truly rest!  The other non-cycling day is a mainly driving day, with some exceptional scenery to see and some short scenic walks along the way.

  • What's the tour like?

The Triple Trails Cycle is graded moderate. You will need a good level of fitness and the operator suggests 90 minutes of cycling three times a week for the three months leading up to your trip. You will need to be able to cycle 50-60km each day, day after day, be used to hills and riding on hard-packed gravel. They recommend training on compacted gravel trails, and completing a multi-day ride prior to your trip to get used to being in the saddle for long periods of time. The more challenging sections over the Tarnbrae Saddle and from Sailors Cutting to the Benmore Dam (on the Alps to Ocean) and the Lake Dunstan Trail include narrower tracks with some switchbacks and exposure in places. With the trip being fully supported, less confident riders can choose to miss these sections with easier options available and the van is always available if you want to shorten the ride on any day.

The Triple Trails trip was challenging at times but always fantastic. Nicky and Sam were the best guides I have ever had both individually (different skills and knowledge) and together. I highly recommend this trip for anyone who has at least basic dirt skills.
