  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts and ends in central Christchurch where you will be collected and returned to at the end of the tour. Fly in/out of Christchurch International Airport (CHC).

  • How long is the tour? How many cycling days?

The tour is 5 days long with all 5 days being cycling days.

  • What's the tour like?

The majority of the West Coast Wilderness trail is compacted gravel with a range of wide and narrower trails (along water races). Cyclists need to be confident riding on uneven surfacers and aware that riding on this surface will reduce cycling speeds. There are sections of smooth sweeping boardwalk over wetlands on the trail and there are also some sealed roads. Most of these roads are quiet back-roads. Cyclists need to be aware of the road rules and able to cope with small amounts of traffic.

  • What is the grading of the tour?

    Introductory to Moderate

The West Coast Wilderness Trail n is graded introductory to moderate. You will be cycling on a mix of wide trails, narrow water races and boardwalk with some undulating hills. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and 2 hours of cycling per week for the three months leading up to your trip is suggested. It is recommended that you train on compacted gravel trails, and completing a multi-day ride prior to your trip to get used to being in the saddle for long periods of time. The more training you have done on hills and on compacted gravel, the more enjoyable your trip will be.

  • Who will lead the group?

The guides are one of the biggest assets of the tour operator and they have pride for their level of quality and high standards. Once the trip reaches 8 people,  two expert guides will join to maximise your enjoyment and overall experience. You’ll know you’re in safe hands as all of the guides are certified in first aid and CPR and many of them are trained bike mechanics. They come from all walks of life but the guides have a common desire to give you the best possible experience, fun and lots of fond memories to take home with you.

  • Are standard bikes available?

This is an e-bike tour but it's possible to hire a standard bike and a small discount will apply. Please let us know if you prefer a standard bike.

Stunning West Coast scenery matched the hassle free pre trip organization by office staff, punctual pick ups and clear instructions throughout trip. No pressure schedule with options available. Good food and healthy picnics along with a variety of good accommodation...plus a knowledgeable, professional and friendly Peter as guide. Use an ebike! It adds to the enjoyment.

Perfect trip for us- manageable level of activity (both cycling and walking); great gear (brand-new ebikes); variety of landscape and experiences; all arrangements made; friendly group. Peter was an excellent tour leader (and driver).
