Soaring mountains, ancient monasteries, endless forests, and a rich cultural heritage — Bhutan calls out to adventurous cyclists ready to ride through one of the world’s most enchanting landscapes. On this unforgettable 15-day journey, you’ll follow Bhutan’s legendary Lateral Road for 785 km, pedaling from the capital of Thimphu at the foot of the Himalayas all the way to the border town of Samdrup Jongkhar, nestled at the edge of the Assam Plain. Along the way, it’s not just about the ride — you’ll also explore iconic dzongs (fortified monasteries), experience Bhutan’s remote highland life, and soak in the tranquility of untamed forests and yak-dotted pastures.
Your adventure begins in Paro with a hike to the famed Tiger’s Nest Monastery — an awe-inspiring introduction to Bhutan and a great way to acclimate. Then, from Thimphu, you take on your first major challenge: the Dochula Pass. At the summit, you’re rewarded with views of the eastern Himalayas before descending into the lush Punakha Valley to visit Bhutan’s most picturesque dzong. From there, the route winds through rushing rivers, thick forests, and rugged mountain passes toward the sacred Bumthang Valley. A well-earned rest day gives you time to explore the birthplace of Bhutanese Buddhism before continuing into the serene Tang and Ura valleys, where rice terraces wrap around the rolling hills.
As you near the end of your ride, prepare for dramatic landscapes, thrilling climbs, and sweeping descents through the Himalayan foothills, eventually reaching Trashigang — the easternmost stop on the Lateral Road. Then comes the grand finale: a spectacular descent from over 2,000 meters to near sea level as you roll into the lush lowlands at Bhutan’s eastern border. On your final day, you cross into India and transfer to Guwahati, Assam’s capital, where your journey ends.
Ready to ride through the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon? This is your invitation to discover Bhutan — one breathtaking pedal stroke at a time.
