Bhutan immediately conjures up an image of mystery. There is no doubting the Himalayan kingdom is an intriguing destination to visit let alone cycle through. Joining this exciting adventure will introduce you to the most jaw-dropping scenery and the fascinating influence of Buddhism. It also allows you to meet the hospitable Bhutanese people.

Bhutan places a lot of importance upon preserving its culture and environment and it is little wonder given the array of gorgeous scenery, incredible monasteries, dzongs (fortified buildings) and architecture the country packs in. You’ll cover it all on two wheels as you cycle Bhutan from west to east before crossing over the border into India.

After transferring to the capital of Thimphu, you’ll begin to ease into cycling at a higher altitude with gentle rides. But once you’re good to go, it’s time to begin climbing. There are numerous passes to conquer before descending into Punakha to enjoy the valley. One climb leads you to Trongsa, where you’ll be able to marvel in the majesty of Bhutan’s largest dzong, which stands above the Mangde Chu River. Naturally a descent will follow and this one includes flying past stunning forests until you reach the town of Jakar. Take a small detour into the Tang Valley and enjoy the plush luxury of the former palace of Ogyen Chollng. It now acts as a museum and  guesthouse that you’ll be fortunate to stay in.

Swapping back to bikes, continue heading east to check out the famous snow-capped peaks of Bhutan. The riding is now typified by sights of striking prayer flags, while descents take you into even more remote parts of the country. Eventually you’ll come to the snug town of Trashingang, the most eastern point of this breathtaking cross-country trip across Bhutan. This is the point where you’ll begin flying on the descent towards the Assam plains. It is here where you’ll cross into India to mark the end of an adventure that will live forever in your memories.
