  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts and ends in Beechworth in Northeast Victoria, Australia.

A number of airlines fly to Albury (in NSW) from Melbourne, Sydney and now Brisbane. Albury is a 45-minute drive to Beechworth; the tour operator can arrange a pick up service from Albury airport (ABX) for a fee.

Alternatively, there is a V/Line train service through Wangaratta from Melbourne and Sydney, from where the tour operator can arrange a collection for a fee.

If you are driving, Beechworth is approximately 285 km (177 mi) from Melbourne, so roughly a 3-hour drive north. It is a 7-hour drive south from Sydney.

  • How long is the tour? How many days riding?

The tour is 4 days long with 2 days riding.

  • What's the tour like?

The cycling is relatively easy, in fact, it is easy! Riding along the well paved, well signposted Murray to Mountains Rail Trail – it’s off-road, safe and stress-free. The rail trail runs all the way from Beechworth to Bright making navigation simple.

The cycling distances are around 30-40 km (19-25 mi) per day with the majority downhill or flat. There are E-bike (pedal-assisted bikes) available to hire if you're worried you may not be able to manage the daily ride.

  • Can I hire a bike?

Yes, there are new 24 gear flat bar Trek bikes available to hire, or if you’re in any doubt about your ability, there are also E-bikes. These are like any normal bike but come with ‘pedal assist’ technology that gives you a little extra boost when you need it, meaning you can keep up with friends or get to your destination without any stress.

You can also bring your own bike if you prefer.

  • Is there a minimum age?

Yes, 18 is the minimum age for the tour.

  • If I'm traveling on my own, do I have to pay more?

If you wish to have your own room or are traveling alone then a single supplement is payable.

  • Are helmets required?

A helmet is required to be worn on all biking activities and is non-negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you won't be allowed to cycle.

The tour operator does have helmets available to hire but if you have your own this is preferable so that you are comfortable with a well-fitted helmet.

  • Are bag transfers or transport included?

Yes. Your bags will be moved between the accommodation daily and a return transfer is included back to the start point in Beechworth.

  • As the tour is self-guided, how will I know where to go?

Your arrival information will include detailed, daily riding instructions for your tour along with the map showing your route highlighted. Riding instructions will provide thorough information and give you the flexibility to travel at your own pace.

  • What if I buy a lot of wine or other large purchases?

The tour operator will gladly arrange to collect your purchases so you don't have to worry about that whilst you are enjoying the cycling.

  • Are accommodation upgrades available?

Your tour accommodation is comfortable, central ensuite 3.5-4 star, but if you'd like that little extra bit of luxury then the tour operator knows the places. On each of the 3 nights you can be upgraded to the best in each of the towns you are staying, for example (subject to availability): Beechworth - stay at the stunning Provenance. Myrtleford - experience Alpine scenery and Moroccan style decor at Panoramia Villas. In Bright - smooth edges and sleek design at beautiful Next to Bliss in central Bright.

  • Can I leave my car somewhere during the trip?

Yes. You can leave your vehicle at the accommodation (street parking) and at the end of the cycling there is a free transfer back to your accommodation/car.

We had the most fabulous time on this self-guided bicycle tour.

We started in Beechworth after Bernard collected us from the airport in Albury. He got us sorted with our bikes and were then on our way.

We did have a puncture on day 2 in Myrtleford so we rang Bernard who came out to us and fixed the tyre and we were on our way in no time!!!!

Great accommo, great food and choice of wineries.

I will do this again!

We are a fairly fit middle aged couple who have just completed the 4 day Beechworth to Bright self guided cycling tour. While we were not blessed with nice weather we thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Beechworth to Milawa is about 10km of fairly steep downhill and the other 20km is relatively flat. If going in the cooler months be sure to dress warmly on this section as our hands were frightfully cold after hurtling downhill in drizzle and 4 degrees temp. For the Milawa to Myrtleford section we chose to go via Wangaratta which gave us a lovely diverse range of scenery. That section is the only one with a noticeable uphill ride (over Taylor's Gap) and it was not overly difficult. The final section of Mrytleford to Bright has a number of excellent stop off points. Our favorite lunch spot was Gapsted Winery (between Milawa and Myrtleford) but every stop was fun and the food excellent. As the Rail Trail is fully sealed, if you are a road bike cyclist you may want to take your own bike - simply because a bike you are used to is always the most comfortable option.
The tour operator obviously has a number of people cycling this route as each lunch spot was expecting us and knew exactly what was included in our meal.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed this tour and are keen to do more cycling tours.

Overall the tour was well organized. The accommodation at Beechworth, Myrtleford and Bright was decent. Outstanding food at the Motel at Myrtleford. The scenery along the route varies from dry pastures from Beechworth to green mountain on either side nearing Bright. Overall I enjoyed the tour. Would recommend this tour for those who enjoy a slow and lazy ride and savor the food along the way.
